March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and in conjunction with this recognition, the Brain Injury Association of MS will be presenting the 4th Annual “Art of Recovery” Traveling Art Exhibit, created to bring awareness about brain injury in Mississippi.  We are excited to announce that the exhibit will be unveiled this year in Jackson at the New Capitol Building in the rotunda on March 25th from 9:00-2:00. The “Art of Recovery” has become quite popular, and we want to include as many pieces of artwork as possible this year.

View the art from 2009

We are asking Mississippians, who have suffered a brain injury, to paint, draw or make a collage or any kind of artwork on a canvas, which will be provided by the BIA of MS.  You are also welcome to create your own medium of art if you would like which may not involve a canvas. The artwork could convey feelings about the experience with brain injury or could show artistic talents in anyway you chose.  Along with the artwork, we are asking each artist to please submit a biography of themselves, information about their brain injury and how it has affected their life.

If you or someone you know with a brain injury is interested in participating in the “Art of Recovery” project, please contact us so that we can mail the canvas, release form and the return mailing paper with return label attached as soon as possible.  We need to have the artwork and release form back in our office by March 5, 2010.

The artwork will be available for sale through a “sealed bid auction” as the exhibit travels to different locations around the state from March until our annual event November 06, 2010.  At that time the bids will be opened and artwork will go to the highest bidder.  Proceeds of the auction will go to the BIA of MS to help further our mission.

If you would like the “Art of Recovery” to be displayed in your local area, please have the interested facility contact our office, and we will schedule a date.  In the past the exhibit has been on display in hospitals, art galleries and rehab facilities all over the State for a period of one week up to a month.  The main goal for this project is awareness; therefore, we would like to display the exhibit in as many locations as possible.

You may contact me at the BIA of MS office phone number above or by email at dpierce@msbia.org.  I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

 Thanks,

Dana Pierce
, Project Director
